Video Conferencing

The Computing Services Department has introduced the capability for the delivery of multi-media classrooms, utilising Video Conferencing at TV quality for the delivery of lectures and tutorials to Virtual classrooms and allowing for virtual meeting rooms.

We currently have 2 Video Conferencing systems in place, 1 standard Definition and 1 High Definition.

We have been at the leading edge in the use of Video Conferencing for a number of years and use the systems to provide the following services.

Video Conferencing at ITT DublinVideo Conferencing Facility:
Our current Video Conferencing Facility is the PolyCom Viewstation FX which accesses the HEAnet Video Conferencing service. This allows for point to point and point to multipoint conferencing without the need for all participants to have compatible end point equipment installed.

Our current HD VDS offers:

  • True high definition (HD) video at 720p resolution with the ability to connect multiple HD video sources
  • Polycom's VC2 vision realized with presence capabilities and full management of systems through Polycom Converged Management Application™ (Polycom CMA™) solution
  • Hear voices and music clearly with 22 kHz audio in StereoSurround™
  • Share HD content easily in native resolution including images, documents and multimedia
  • Optimize your meeting room with the HDX Executive Collection floor stand or wall mount solutions

Virtual Conferencing at ITT DublinVirtual Conferences
Another aspect of the technology is to provide a broadcast medium for a remote presentation. The local participant can join in the conference and participate in the interactive sessions through the use of a local facilitator at the conference.

Virtual Classrooms
The system provides the ability to connect to remote sites and provide a learning environment through the Video medium. This is a very open collaborative type forum for lectures tutorials etc. With document cameras and multi display options the lecturer can be seen on one screen discussing a document being presented on a second screen.

Virtual Meeting Room
The technology is perfectly suited to the ‘virtually there’ approach to meetings. The remote attendees can attend meetings as if they were at the end of the meeting table. With automatic track cameras the picture automatically moves to the person talking, allowing for a seamless presentation.

Our Video Conferencing equipment is currently located in the Boardroom and the training room in Icon Court. The Boardroom system can be moved to other locations within the campus, if required.

The technology has been used for seven years in TU Dublin - Tallaght Campus and currently provides the method for delivering a number of modules for the. Some of the courses are:

University of Limerick Equine Studies
BASS course to Castletownbere.

Smartboard Technology is also available within the campus. Allowing traditional whiteboard capabilities, this technology can also be used in a variety of learning and collaboration situations. See also CELT and Moodle
