Module Overview

Work Placement in Spatial Planning and Environmental Management

The aim of this work placement module is to introduce these learners to the personal and professional skills necessary to translate the knowledge they have acquired into real world applications of the practical components of the programme.  By gaining real-world work experience through the completion of this placement, it is anticipated that the students’ overall learning will be enhanced by gaining hands-on experience of their discipline in a professional setting.

The duties assigned to students during the work placement are mutually agreed in advance of the placement, between the Wok placement module coordinator, the employer and the student.

The work placement also aims to develop in the learner, an understanding of and appreciation for the professional and ethical standards required by the industry and contextualize these topics.

The learner may also use this placement to commence their research into possible dissertation topics/areas. The placement also provides opportunities for appraisal of students as prospective employees and the evaluation of possible potential career options.

The nature of the placement is flexible to enable learners to seek positions within a variety of discipline-related employment settings. Suggested placements will be assessed individually to ensure quality and sufficiency with regard to spatial planning and/or environmental management content. Variety in planned work will also be encouraged. While it is possible to complete the work placement part-time, and/or in a range of different roles, fulfilling one month of (continuous) work placement is encouraged. Approval for a particular placement must be received before commencement in order to fulfil assessment regulations.

While it is acknowledged that new discipline fields may arise in the future, the following is a list of possible placements where students may find discipline-related positions:

  • Planning/Environmental Management consultancies
  • Multi-discipline Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) companies
  • Local and Central Government departments and agencies
  • Semi-state agencies
  • Property, retail and development companies
  • NGO’s

SafePass, a mandatory one-day health and safety awareness programme, aims to raise the standard of safety awareness in the construction industry, and enables those who successfully complete the training to receive a Safe Pass Registration Card. As part of this module the opportunity to complete this training is offered as part of work placement preparation (and is delivered by an in-house SOLAS Approved tutor), to enable our students to work onsite and hold this certification upon graduation.

While the Work placement module co-ordinator, where possible, will provide support to learners seeking placement, it is the responsibility of the student to be proactive in seeking a placement that fulfils the requirements of the module.
