The use or exploitation of agriculture, forestry, tourism/recreation, marine and fresh water resources each impact on or are impacted by environmental quality. Exploitation of these natural resources is currently managed through a variety of management models. This module examines sustainable resource management in areas of agriculture, tourism/recreation, conservation and wildlife, explores case studies pertaining to resource management in Ireland and Europe and relates natural resource management to the principle of sustainable development.
The aim of this module is to develop skills in resource management, to become familiar with the range of management options that are available and to heighten the student’s critical awareness to the possibility of a range of management solutions to resource management issues.
Students explore and critique a broad literature on resource management in the tutorial sessions.
The syllabus includes the following elements:
• Sustainable development, indicators, setting targets, participation
• The commons and management of the commons
• Tourism and recreation management , carrying capacity, LAC process other management models
• Agriculture
• Forestry
• Marine and freshwater resources, their exploitation and management
• Readings from texts on resource management issues
