Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a well-developed and widely used technology, which can benefit numerous discipline areas, including those of planning and environmental management. The module introduces students to the concepts and application of GIS and provides a practical foundation for its use as a spatial analytical tool, which can assist in the development of sustainable planning and environmental management solutions. The module comprises both lectures and laboratory practical exercises using industry standard software
The module comprises:
Mathematical aspects of mapping and map projections
Map design (for various media - paper, newspapers, TV, electronic publishing, etc.) including purpose, limitations and generalisation
Data sources, copyright, currency, data lineage
Digital map production techniques from design through to publishing
Map revision concepts and techniques
Map publication & printing ((pre-press, press and post-press)
Classroom based sessions will mainly consist of hands-on exercises supplemented by and explained through lectures. Fieldwork and computer laboratory sessions will be used to expose learners to various measurement methodologies and processing applications.
