Soil fertility and structure are central elements of soil suitability which reflects the use and value of soils in
Ireland. Soils play a critical role in watersheds and are a sink for contaminants. Their role in the storage and
release of C has in recent years taken on a significant role in the management of anthropogenic C.
The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the nature of soil, soil development, physical and
chemical properties and the role of soil in the environment as a natural resource.
The syllabus includes the following elements:
Formation of soils, soil classification, the soil map for Ireland , soil suitability, soil structure, soil water, soil
acidity and alkalinity, soil fertility and soil biology.
Lectures, tutorials, classroom discussion and site visit/s and fieldwork
