Module Overview

Economics for Sustainable Development

This module is an introduction to economic concepts and principles. It is intended to provide students with a broad understanding of how an economy works and how government interventions can influence outcomes in market systems using Irish and international examples. The module introduces the students to basic economic theories, the role of the individual, the consumer, the firm, and the state in various economic systems and looks at the various market systems that exist. It will introduce the student to concepts of supply and demand, factors of production, economic growth, stagnation recession and depression. The module will examine the role of money, taxation, labour market policies and how an economy can change over time. It will link economic and political decision making and the concept of choice. It will link economics to the Sustainable Development Goals and how land values are impacted by market forces influencing urban development, densities, and pressures for investment. The module will examine how this market led pressure will have to be controlled to delivered ordered development, sustainable solutions and environmental protection and enhancement. It will provide students with a focus on the economic aspects of spatial planning and environmental management with the objective of engaging the students in critical thinking and analysis.
