The module considers the rural environment in the context of development and the need for the preservation of ecosystems and communities. Students will examine the role spatial planning plays in achieving national, regional and local requirements while preserving environmental integrity, active living, at the same time addressing climate adaptation and meeting the 17 sustainable goals.
The module will also briefly examine EU policy on rural development including the Common Agriculture Policy, the Leader Programme and local development within rural areas.

- The history and morphology of the countryside;
- Planning for rural town and villages – renewal;
- Addressing issues of:-
- Rural housing;
- infrastructure in and for rural areas;
- Sustainable tourism;
- Protection of habitats and landscape;
- Rural transportation;
- Economic activity in rural areas;
- Changing demographic structures;
- Social provision;
- Greenways, open countryside and activities in rural areas;
- Flood protection;
- Forestry, agriculture, aquaculture and associated industries;
- Planning in the countryside and meeting the objectives of the National Planning Framework and the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies
