This module consists of field-based projects and exercises developed to expose the student to a range of techniques used to gather data on flora and fauna, coastal ecosystems, woodlands, wetlands, uplands and other habitats in Ireland. The work develops skills in the area of field assessment, sample collection and data gathering, presentation and report writing. There is an emphasis on identification of species and description of key habitats in Ireland and on the analysis of data gathered.
The syllabus includes the following elements:
· Planning field work, requirements of the survey, equipment and safety
· Field survey work, mapping, habitat description, species identification (taxonomy)
· Recording techniques
· Techniques to allow description of distribution and abundance of species
· Use of literature and desk surveys
· Report presentation, figures and tables for presentation of results
Fieldtrips (including an extended field trip to sites of high nature conservation value, e.g. in west of Ireland, during May or at another time during the main field season from late April to September), lab work (species identification) and tutorials.
