Module Overview

Urban Layout Design and Analysis

This module introduces students to the principles and practice of good placemaking. It aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of social, physical and environmental consequence of design and planning decisions.  This module requires students to work both individually and as part of a team to develop a thorough understanding of an urban area from a planner’s perspective. It provide students with an understanding of emerging trends and best practice in placemaking in Ireland and abroad. 

The aim of this module is to equip students with the necessary planning skills to carry out an in-depth and strategic analysis of a selected urban area. It also aims to familiarise students good site planning, carrying-out site analysis, developing concepts drawings, calculating development capacity and preparing framework plans, with focus on the development of students’ applied spatial and design skills. It also advances the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools in site design and planning..

The syllabus includes the following elements:

  • The definitions, concepts and principles of good placemaking;
  • The techniques and practice of placemaking – spatial concepts, frameworks, guidance and briefs;
  • Secondary and desktop research
  • Field surveys / Primary Research
  • SWOT analysis
  • Housing and mixed used layout development;
  • Open space and landscape design;
  • Site visit, analysis and evaluation;
  • Calculating development capacities and densities;
  • Designing within density and development control guidelines
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Model making

Learning and Teaching Methods:

Site visits and individual studio based project work. Group crits.
