Module Overview

Development Management 1

Development Management refers to the planning application process and it is one of the core functions of the planning system. This module is comprised of a series of lectures covering the planning application procedure and the interactions that take place within it. The role of key decisions makers in the process (such as the Local Authorities and an Bord Pleanála) are also considered. The process that is followed during the assessment of a planning application is explored through a number of urban and rural case studies. Issues such as Protected Structures, Exempted Development and Building Design are also covered. Students are also introduced to the key skills of planning policy analysis, report writing and composing planning conditions and reasons for refusal.

  • The role of the Local Authority and the planning application process
  • The role of an Bord Pleanála and the appeals process
  • Planning Issues in Rural Areas; One off rural housing
  • Case Studies on rural housing, housing schemes and commercial development
  • Planning Enforcement
  • The planning application process and Protected Structures
  • The planners report and composing conditions and reasons for refusal.
  • Assessing building design.
