This module introduces the concept of national and regional planning by exploring the interaction between concepts, theories and practice of spatial planning and development at the national, regional county and city / urban scale. The module also considers the theory and practice of Marine Spatial Planning as an effective and sustainable way of managing our marine and coastal environment.

- Historical Theories of the structure and development of regions and urban areas such as Concentric Zone Theory and Central Place Theory
- The evolution of Irish Spatial Planning Policy
- Current Spatial Planning Concepts at the regional and city scale to include urban regeneration, globalisation, urbanisation
- Current Spatial Planning Policy such as the National Planning Framework, the National Development Plan, Regional Planning Guidelines, City / County Development Plans and the interaction between policy and practice at the national, regional and county scale
- Current concepts / theories of urban and regional development, e.g. the Compact City, City Regions and Polycentric City Regions.
- The evolution of Marine Spatial Planning and the opportunities and challenges we face in planning for marine and coastal environments
- The requirements for the successful preparation and implementation of marine spatial plans and strategies
