The ecology of semi-natural habitats is explored with an emphasis on the processes at work within each
habitat, the key species present and how habitats are described and classified. The aim of the module is to
give the student an appreciation of the ecological characteristics that give rise to the formation of different
habitat types; the nature conservation value of habitats, flora and fauna; the impact of humans on the semi-
natural environment; and the need for habitat management. Diverse habitat types are examined, including
coastal and freshwater habitats, peatlands, grasslands and woodlands
The syllabus includes the following elements:
· Semi-natural habitats – origins and ecological processes
· Human impact through time on habitats
· Flora and fauna of main habitat types
· Basic taxonomy
· Biodiversity, measurement and description
· Concepts and practices of habitat management
