This is a foundation course in environmental chemistry, geology and geomorphology. No prior knowledge of
the topic is assumed. This module provides the learner with basic knowledge of chemistry, geology and
geomorphology, to facilitate an understanding of the role these subject areas play in landscape interpretation,
environmental processes and management.
The syllabus includes the following elements:
· Geological, glacial and hydrological processes and their influence on the Irish landscape
· Origins and properties of main rock types and an introduction to soil formation
· Atomic structure, bonding and chemical reactions
· pH, acids and bases
· Properties of water and key chemical concepts underlying pollution
Lectures, field trips (including a day trip to Wicklow Mountains, or similar, to examine geology and
geomorphology at regional scale), laboratory sessions and tutorials.
