This module for MA students aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the structures of government at a local, national and European level and to examine current issues in Irish and EU government and politics. It offers a critical introduction to the political system and political culture in Ireland from a public affairs perspective. It also critically examines the political structures of the European Union, and covers the politics of Northern Ireland since the signing of the Belfast Agreement.

The module will be generally taught by a combination of weekly lectures and group presentations, debates and discussions. During the debates between groups, emphasis will be placed on the ability to deliver the arguments orally. Students will be assigned specific readings to help them with independent learning.
