Module Overview

Digital Business Skills for HR

This module provides learners with a foundational understanding of essential digital competencies required for contemporary HR practice. Designed to be hands-on, practical, and relevant, it reflects how real-world HR is changing.

Emphasising digital identity, professional communication, ethical awareness, and the practical application of business tools, the module builds student confidence in navigating a technology-enhanced workplace. Learners will gain experience creating digital content, designing and presenting online training events, building professional LinkedIn profiles, writing SEO-optimised job adverts, and working with spreadsheets to handle basic HR data tasks.

The modules offer essential grounding for first-year HR students and set the stage for more technical systems and analytical tools explored in Part Two (Semester 2)

    Use of Word and PowerPoint to produce clear, professional HR documents and presentations.

    Using tools like Trello, Zoom, and shared drives to support remote HR work and digital collaboration.

    Creating a LinkedIn profile and exploring its role in recruitment and employer branding.

    Planning and delivering short online training using presentation tools and interactive features.

Practical understanding and application of the Digital Business Skills required in a HR environment

The indicative curriculum for the module includes: Information Systems for HR Practitioners focussing on the integration of MS Office systems and with an emphasis on MS Word and Powerpoint in a HR context. Data and numerical literacy development with an emphasis on developing from general spreadsheet knowledge to the ability to apply techniques and strategies in a targeted and meaningful way. Working on the cloud, with apps and with a variety of new tools that will assist HR practitioners and managers contribute in tangible ways to any operational environment.

The teaching and learning approach is designed to support students in achieving the module learning outcomes through a blend of applied, reflective, and collaborative methods. The module emphasises digital confidence, professional communication, and practical skills in using workplace technologies relevant to HR practice.

Blended and Technology-Enhanced Learning

Students will engage with online materials, guided tutorials, and practical software demonstrations via the Brightspace VLE. Digital tools such as LinkedIn, presentation software, and spreadsheet platforms will be used to support interactive, self-directed learning. Assignments and short quizzes will be submitted online to reinforce digital literacy and reflective practice.

Workshops and Lectures

On-campus sessions will combine concise lectures with hands-on workshops that introduce students to key technologies used in HR functions. Activities are designed to build familiarity with real-world tools for communication, learning design, branding, and data handling.

Computer Labs and Collaborative Learning

Students will develop digital communication and numerical skills through guided lab sessions. Group projects will promote teamwork, creativity, and peer feedback. Topics such as data responsibility, digital identity, and professional presentation are embedded throughout.
