Module Overview

Strategic Management

This module is designed to provide final year undergraduate students with an introduction to, and overview of, strategic management. The module provides students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of the main analytical techniques and conceptual frameworks in strategic management. Strategic Management is a capstone module for students studying on management programmes. This module draws on students learning from various management disciplines and is concerned with the overall purpose and direction of an organisation and the decision-making processes which direct the nature, scope and competitive position of an organisation. This module emphasises the need for a holistic perspective of the strategic issues confronting an organisation. Through helping students gain a better understanding of how organisations formulate, develop, and implement strategy , this module provides students with a management decision-making perspective and explores a range of issues confronting organisation and consequences of decision-making at senior management level.

Strategic decisions, thinking strategically and critical thinking

Understanding strategic management and the nature of strategy. Business models. The corporate mission, vision and values. Perspectives and paradoxes on strategic thinking and decision-making. Critical thinking in strategic management.

 

Organisational purpose

Introduction & Overview: Understandings of strategy. Overviews of strategy. The need for deeper understandings. Linking other disciplines to strategic management.

Purposes of strategy and organizations, mission and  vision statements, stakeholders, values, value creation and capture.

Analyzing strategic position: External analysis. Internal analysis. Integrating analysis.

Analyzing strategic  choices and decisions.

Analyzing implementation & dealing with outcomes.

This module is highly interactive and class participation and self-directed learning are critical requirements. Lectures involve class discussions, individual and teamwork activities, reflections, video material, article/newspaper/periodical readings, among others. Current issues relevant to business, current affairs and society will be used to support students learning. Academic research, such as the indicative sources listed in the reading list, will be used along with case studies, as well as working with participants own experiences & interests will be harnesses to build participants' capacities to analyse strategic management issues, apply concepts and analytical tools and make informed decisions.
