Module Overview

Management Principles

The module covers all aspects of modern management in terms of managing and being managed. This module aims to provide the student with an understanding of the theory and practices of management with specific reference given to the retail and services sector.

Unit 1. Introduction to the nature of management activity; attributes of effective managers; critical success factors in hospitality management.                                                                           3

Unit 2. Brief overview of the evolution of management thought. From Scientific management to Modern theories.  3

Unit 3.Basic forms of business organisations; organisational structure and design; the business environment; Porters Five Forces.                                                                                       3

Unit 4.Planning and Decision Making in internal and external environments; assessment of the economic, social, demographic, legal and technological factors; the managers role as an environmental monitor and assessor to better aid planning and decision making; time span of plans; barriers to planning; decision making process and techniques; management and group decision making.                

Unit 5Control; the meaning and importance of control; types of control methods and processes applicable, organisational factors creating the need for control; characteristics of effective control 3

Unit 6 Motivation; aspects of motivation theory and their relevance to the industry; overview of existing motivation programmes; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors; how to structure and implement a motivational programme for a retail/service organisation.                                                     3

Unit 7.Leadership; overview and critical evaluation of leadership theories; assessment of leadership. Styles and their impact on communication and motivation; leadership and the individual and the group; time management and leadership; leadership and delegation and empowerment                     3

Unit 8.Teamwork and group work; Importance of teams; types of teams; criteria for team effectiveness; team membership; team processes; organisational support, co-ordination and communication in teams; summaries of team roles; and the assessment of leadership and group dynamics                     

Unit 9.Introduction to the Quality Manager; approaches to quality; Total Quality Management; tools and techniques for quality planning and improvement; design for an organisation for quality; Quality teamwork and empowerment.                                                                                             3

This module is student centered. It encourages interaction between participants through group work, Case studies, project work and seminars. The teaching methods include: Lectures Tutorials, Visiting Lectures and field trips, Case Studies and discussion, Group sessions and seminars
