Module Overview

Research Project

This module consists of a research project undertaken in an area of mechanical engineering chosen from an appropriate research area or field of engineering practice. A successful research project allows the student to develop a high level of expertise in their selected subject area, plan, implement and document a project which answers the provided research question and critically analyse the overall result in the context of the literature.

The student is expected to work independently under academic supervision and apply and develop research and other skills as appropriate to the particular topic. The student is also expected to develop a project plan at the outset ensure that progress, time and resources are managed according to that plan.

Project students receive a grounding in relevant research skills in the research methods module on the programme or, should have covered similar material elsewhere.

The typical thesis will encompass critical and creative thinking, project planning, resource management, problem solving, research skills, various engineering skills as appropriate to the topic, presentation skills and report writing.

The research project is carried out on an individual basis in collaboration with the project supervisor, who will provide guidance on the development, execution, analysis and documentation of the project via regular scheduled meetings, as well as interactions with panels of supervisors at the initial and intermediate project presentations.
