This module introduces students to the art and heritage of France within its historical context. It will cover the main periods of French history, its cultural movements, and architectural and artistic achievements.
The module will be delivered in English and in French with supporting documents in either language. A level of B2 (CEFR) in the French language is advisable, especially as a reading competence. Students who have previously completed a module equivalent to French Language 2A will qualify.
The syllabus is indicative. It is presented in chronological order, but the order of the units may be driven by other considerations.
As well as a historical approach to the content, general concepts of the arts, architecture and decorative arts will be covered such as supports, materials, colours, light, perspective and themes.

The module will be delivered with a combination of lectures and case studies, as well as contributions from students in the form of presentations.
It will use a variety of visual resources (documentaries, slideshows, interactive websites), either in class or through self-study.
