Module Overview

Chinese Spoken Language

Students taking this module require to have passed both Chinese language modules in Years 1 and 2 of the programme and to have spent Year 3 in China or another Chinese-speaking country. This module further progresses the students' command of Chinese with an emphasis on the oral language. It will be taught exclusively through the medium of the Chinese language. Aims of the module include:

1. reinforcing the students' knowledge of the structures of Chinese with a particular focus on the oral language;

2. ensuring that students can read and comment Chinese texts and press articles of average difficulty;

3. further developing students' knowledge of Chinese, Taiwanese society;

4. and teaching basic argument techniques in Chinese.

Upon successful completion of this module students should regularly be speaking Chinese at HSK Level 3/4.

Reading of interviews, press articles (all in Chinese): Contents and general direction of the Press in China and Taiwan.

Comprehension of broadcasts important for a general comprehension of Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Singaporean societies: politics, social welfare, migrants issues, Taiwan / China relations, new economic development, minorities, overseas Chinese Communities.

The class will normally be delivered by communicative language classes. Class activities will include reading practice and discussion of press articles and short stories; comprehension exercises and in-class debates.
