Module Description
This module consolidates students' knowledge of historical and contemporary issues about Asia using films as a learning tool. It will prepare students for the production of subtitles into English and introduce them to translation techniques as well as to the issues faced by a professional translator. Learners will be exposed to a more advanced level of spoken Chinese. This module will be taught mainly through the medium of the Chinese language excluding necessary explanations concerning the nuances of English subtitles and Chinese cultural points difficult for students to understand if taught in Chinese.
Module Aims include acquainting students with advanced levels of spoken Chinese, with political, historical and social issues in the work of film directors from China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, & with issues in translation and faced by professional translators.

The students are required to watch movies prior to class; additional film clips will be shown in class to explore themes and topics under discussion. Class will be structured around discussion & analysis of authentic documents, films and texts. Translation and subtitling workshops will introduce students to techniques of translation and with problems associated with translation.
