This module has three key objectives: to extend students’ reading and listening skills in Italian through the study of longer texts/films than those which feature in the Italian Language modules; to extend their knowledge of the geography, history and current affairs of Italy; and to introduce them to the study of Italian-language texts/films which provide important insights into selected periods of Italian history. The class will examine a selection of written texts in Italian and Italian-language films to explore the social/historical context, whilst at the same time allowing students to develop their critical skills and narrative analysis. The aim of this class it to provide a general overview of the major developments in Italian history and society from Unification to the present day through the analysis of Italian narrative. Class content will reflect the research specialisms of Italian lecturing staff in the School of Languages and the actual texts and films studied may vary from year to year to reflect student demand and staff availability, as determined by the research focus of the staff concerned. All texts/films studied will be in the original language.
