Module Description:
The module will build a knowledge base of management and address areas such as the: history of management; organisational goals and objectives; environmental scanning; strategy formulation and implementation; organisational culture; managing change, negotiation; theories and models of leadership; measuring and controlling management performance.
The module aims to introduce students to management concepts through their active participation in developing their understanding of the subject matter as shown above.
Module Aim
The aim of this module is to give participants a thorough awareness and understanding of the role, concepts, methods and techniques of management in business organisations
Introduction to management:
An examination of work of the pioneers in management thought.
An investigation of techniques to examine external and internal environments through environmental scanning.
Defining mission, goals and objectives of the business and establishing organisational plans to implement them.
An examining of decision making.
Basic elements of organisation structure, an investigation into the contingencies determine organisation design and human resource management.
An investigation of some motivation theories and models, and leadership theories and models to include trait theories and contingency theories.
An examination of the basic elements of controlling, the types of control the elements required for effectiveness and special techniques such as management audits.

| Written Examination: The closed book end of year examination will consist of a two-hour written exam designed to assess the student’s understanding of the context and content of the module. There will be five questions in the examination of which students must answer three. The examination will be an integrative assessment of all of the learning outcomes outlined above. | 60% | EX1 |
