UX Design Process & Practice

This module introduces students to the principles, processes, and methods of User Experience (UX) design, focusing on its application in digital design and interaction. Students will explore the key roles within UX, the stages of the design lifecycle, and foundational UX frameworks. Through class-based discussions, presentations, and practical activities, students will develop their understanding of UX design processes and practices. The module emphasises applied learning through project work where students will create and present low- to mid-fidelity prototypes relevant to their areas of interest.

Overview of User Experience (UX) and its importance in digital designPrinciples of user-centered designRoles in UX design teams

The UX Design Process

Key stages of the UX process: research, ideation, design, testing, and iterationRelationship between UX design and broader digital product development

Research Techniques & Analysis

Techniques for gathering user insights:- Surveys and questionnaires- User interviews- Observations and ethnographyBasics of analysing user data to inform design

Prototyping and Wireframing

Introduction to low- and mid-fidelity prototypesTools for digital prototyping (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch)Best practices for designing user interfaces and interactions

UX Evaluation Techniques

Usability testing fundamentals:Planning and conducting testsObserving and recording user interactionsSynthesizing usability findingsHeuristic evaluation and design principles for usability

Communicating Design Ideas

Creating effective UX documentation: personas, user journeys, and design specificationsVisual communication for UX: presenting wireframes and prototypesPreparing for stakeholder presentations and design critiques

The module employs a combination of interactive lectures, practical workshops, and collaborative group activities to support student learning. Lectures provide foundational knowledge of UX principles, processes, and methodologies, while workshops focus on hands-on skills such as prototyping, user research, and usability testing. Students will engage in class discussions, critiques, and peer feedback to refine their understanding and practice of UX design. Independent learning is encouraged through guided readings, online resources, and project work. The assessment is project-based, enabling students to apply their learning in a practical, real-world context, fostering both individual and team-based problem-solving skills.
