The aim of this module is to provide detailed knowledge of current practice and future trends in Cellular Pathology and Clinical Cytology. Recent developments in the National Cancer Strategy, Cancer Screening programmes, and novel diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic cancer biomarkers will be reviewed.
Overview of the National Cancer Control Programme and National Cancer Strategy. Recent developments and review of cancer screening programmes and how they improve cancer control, improve cancer care and help to reduce cancer incidence.
Review of biomarker analysis and methods for tumour investigation in medical science, including immunohistochemistry, ISH, gene expression profiling, next generation sequencing and gene mutation analysis for alteration of significance in patient therapy and prognosis.
Disease models: epidemiology and cancer incidence, aetiology, diagnostics, predictive and therapeutic biomarkers of selected cancers (such as but not restricted to cervix, breast, lung, GI tract, skin, brain, soft tissue and lymphoid organs).
Quality management and sustainability in the cellular Pathology laboratory.
This module addresses UN SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-bring. Specifically, target 3.4.

Students will receive formative feedback via a detailed performance rubrics for video mini-lectures.
