Module Overview

Laboratory Research Project

This module gives students direct experience of the management and delivery of a laboratory based research project within the health service. During year 1 of the programme, students perform a critical evaluation of research already undertaken within their specialist discipline area of medical science and produce a literature review. Having already developed a project proposal in the Research Methods and Project Planning module (BIOL9223), students commence laboratory project work and develop independent research skills and approaches.  Several check point sessions with the student's academic mentor are scheduled across the module and a progress report is submitted at the start of year 2. A scientific manuscript suitable for publication is also prepared as part of this module so that students can gain skills in communicating outputs of research activities. The module culminates in an oral assessment which allows the student to demonstrate their wide ranging knowledge within their specialist discipline area and provides an opportunity to advocate and justify their research.

Project 'check point' sessions with academic mentor

Preparation of literature review and scientific manuscript within specialist discipline area

This module consists of a practical, laboratory-based project within a specialist discipline area and so learning is based on the direct experience of the student as they carry out the research. Students have a local supervisor in the laboratory where the project work is being completed and are assigned an academic mentor from the TU Dublin lecturing staff.

Students will receive feedback during each of the check point sessions with their academic mentor. Formative feedback may also be provided via detailed performance rubrics used for individual assessment components.
