Module Overview

ADS1 Making Architecture: Space and Culture

The ADS 1 module provides the learner with a foundation in core architectural pedagogical concepts including design methods, iterative design processes, self- directed research (including architectural precedents), and reflective learning through architectural studio design projects. In a structured introduction students are provided with an understanding of third level teaching and learning, their pathway through architectural education and the role of architects in designing the built environment. The design studio is the core learning and teaching environment.
ADS1 focuses on methods and processes used to undertake architectural projects. Students learn how to observe and analyse buildings and places through mapping and surveying. Students undertake group and individual design projects, focussing on spatial planning, building form and passive environmental strategies. Lessons on the principles of architectural space will be examined through drawings and models and will inform student’s design projects. Students will learn how to represent and communicate project work to peers and colleagues through drawing, modelling and verbal communication.

This module incorporates a Drawing Studio consisting of weekly iterative drawing, modelling and research tasks supporting the studio projects. In the Drawing Studio students use analogue and digital architectural drawing and modelling techniques at various scales and in a variety of conventions. Students learn to draw to observe and record, to investigate and as a tool of design.

Through tutorials, reviews and peer discussion, students are supported in developing personal judgement and ethical approaches to designing and making architecture. Learning is demonstrated through a reflective portfolio.

The ethics of climate and environmental responsibility are central to the module. Particular attention is paid to the objectives, targets, and indicators outlined in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
