Launch of 'Recalling the Celtic Tiger'
On Saturday, in the Trinity College Business School, Fintan O’Toole formally launched Recalling the Celtic Tiger, a book co-edited by Eamon Maher, Brian Lucey and Eugene O’Brien. He noted how timely this book of more than 120 vignettes dealing with the A-Z of the period was, especially in light of a form of wilful collective amnesia that seems to be taking hold of many Irish people in relation to the huge damage wreaked by the Celtic Tiger and its aftermath. We need to learn the lessons of the past and not to repeat the mistakes, O’Toole noted.

First TU Dublin conferring in Nanjing Tech University
Graduates of three programmes, run collaboratively between TU Dublin and Nanjing Tech University, were conferred with their awards at a ceremony in Nanjing on 21st June. Professor David FitzPatrick, President, presented the awards on behalf of TU Dublin. During his visit to the University, Professor FitzPatrick and Professor Qiao Xu, President of Nanjing Tech University, held a bilateral meeting at which the two universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the existing collaboration to include Development and Training of Doctoral students.

How bees use the waggle dance
Bees provide pollination to virtually every fruit and vegetable plant thus playing a crucial role in agricultural food production and wild plant diversity and conservation. They are also an important source of income for beekeepers and this contributes to the economic value of rural areas (there are an estimated 3,000 beekeepers in Ireland).

1916 Bursary Fund 2019/20
The 1916 Bursary is funded by the Department of Education and Skills for eligible applicants to TU Dublin. In 2019/20 there are 25 bursaries of €5,000 per annum for the duration of applicant’s undergraduate studies in TU Dublin, up to four years for full time undergraduate programmes and six years for part time undergraduate programmes.

Successful 24 hours for Synergy mentored Entrepreneurs
The Bolton Trust was established in 1987 by the staff of DIT to support Entrepreneurs. Since 2003 they have run an annual competition for start-up’s and spin-outs from DIT programmes who are seeking investment to support their growth. In this inaugural year of TU Dublin, start-ups from the New Frontiers Programmes from Blanchardstown and Tallaght campuses were also eligible to compete for the first time. The 2019 Bolton Trust Innovation Award finals were hosted by PWC at Spencer Dock on Wednesday evening (1st May). Prior to this, following a shortlisting and interview process over several weeks, three finalists were ultimately selected who were then provided with pitch and business planning coaching by PWC staff, leading up to the head to head pitch to an invited audience and judging panel to compete for the cash prize of €10,000.

NDA Recognition of Excellence Trophy
The National Disability Authority has conferred Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) with a Recognition of Excellence trophy in celebration of a decade-long collaboration with its founding Institutions, and the new University’s commitment to the application of Universal Design. NDA Chairperson, Helen Guinan and Dr Gerald Craddock, Chief Officer of the NDA’s Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) presented the award to TU Dublin President, Professor David FitzPatrick. The announcement was made at a celebratory function attended by the Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, TU Dublin staff and students, and representatives from the NDA and Grangegorman Development Agency.

Student Crowned Knorr Student Chef of the Year 2019
After a two hour cook-off, student Lee McDonagh, representing Technological University Dublin – Tallaght Campus, has been crowned the Knorr Student Chef of the Year for 2019, making the Tallaght campus the reigning champions for two years running. Lee was up against seven other student chefs from across Ireland, in a competition to create two plates based around the theme 'Street on a Plate: a street food feast inspired by the food trucks, street stalls and farmers markets of Ireland'. This year's competition celebrated the evolving palette of the Irish population and its influence on Irish food markets.

Minister welcomes Oireachtas draft order approval for TU Dublin
Following the granting on 17 July 2018 by the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, T.D., of the application for technological university status made under the Technological Universities Act 2018 by Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Blanchardstown and Institute of Technology Tallaght, the Dáil on 16 October 2018 approved a draft order by the Minister, appointing 1 January 2019 as the date on which these three Institutes of Technology shall be dissolved and the new Technological University Dublin shall be established.
