Maths Eyes is a unique competition that gets people of all ages to look around and see the mathematics in their surroundings. They in turn capture this in a photograph adding a caption to show the maths to others. Each year since 2013, in collaboration with Maths Week Ireland, there has been a national Maths Eyes competition with U7,U11, U14, U19, Family and Community and Special Projects categories. There were 560 entries this year. The prize giving and announcement of the over-all winner in each category for this competition took place on Thursday 23rd May with the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, hosting the event.

The Minister praised the winning posters and emphasised the importance of maths. “The Maths Eyes project is a great initiative to encourage people of all ages to see mathematics as part of our lives and encourages a very positive attitude towards maths that can only enhance learning.” The Minister added: “Initiatives such as Maths Eyes and Maths Week Ireland and play an important role in encouraging and supporting learning of mathematics, which is important for each individual in their personal lives and also critical in building the skills we need for the 21st Century.”

This year a number of Maths Eyes projects were showcased which shows how the development of maths eyes is being integrated into teacher education programmes. The pupils got to display their work at the award ceremony at the Department of Education, Marlborough St, Dublin with Minister Joe Mc Hugh, where they received their trophies.

Maths Eyes was developed by Dr Terry Maguire, Director National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in association with Ciaran O’Sullivan of TU Dublin Tallaght. Maths Week is an annual event and this year it will take place from 12th – 20th October 2019. Founded and coordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technology, the festival is a partnership of groups interested in promoting maths and has become the largest event of its kind in the world. In 2018, over 400,000 participated in Maths Week Ireland in schools, universities, institutes of technology, visitor and cultural centres and on the streets.
