About the Course

Electronic Engineering at IT TallaghtThe Honours Degree allows students to develop a deeper understanding of engineering principles and acquire the ability to quickly grasp engineering issues across a range of different fields.  The graduate engineer will be able to offer solutions to problems that are driven by well developed analytical and practical skills.  Once again the BEng (Hons) Degree in Electronic Engineering is a strong technically focused programme and is targeted at producing graduate design engineers. Electronic Engineers are trained, during their careers, to be creative and inventive and society calls upon them to solve many difficult problems as well creating new devices such as medical instruments, high tech computer networks, advanced mobile phones and software systems.  Many opportunities are available to the experienced professional engineer in terms of continuing to lead engineering design projects or alternatively to enter the world of management.  In the final year of the programme students are provided with a major design project based on a hardware or software topic and this important element of the programme and is designed to develop problem solving, design, project management and communications skills.

A student may exit to take employment in industry upon completion of the BEng Honours programme or progress to a postgraduate degree programme. The opportunities are plentiful.

Career Opportunities

Electronic Engineering at IT TallaghtMost Electronic Engineers work in office buildings, laboratories, or industrial plants. Others may spend time outdoors at telecommunication sites and production sites, where they monitor or direct operations or solve onsite problems. Some engineers travel extensively to plants or worksites. Supervisory engineers are responsible for major components of a design project or entire design projects.

An Honours Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering is required for almost all entry level electronic design engineering jobs. However, an electronic engineer trained in one branch of electronics may easily work in related branches. This flexibility allows employers to meet staffing needs in new technologies and specialties in which engineers may be in short supply. It also allows engineers to shift to fields that more closely match their interests. Engineers design products and design systems that ensure the quality of the products and the efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process.

Engineers develop new materials that both improve the performance of products and take advantage of advances in technology. They analyse the impact of the systems they design on the environment and on people using them. Engineering knowledge is applied to improving many things, including the quality of telecommunications systems, the quality of healthcare, and the operation of computer networks. In addition to design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of breakdowns, and test manufactured products to maintain quality.

Increasing employment of engineers in high skill design and service industries will continue employment growth. Competitive pressures and advancing technology will ensure companies must continually improve and update product designs and optimise their manufacturing processes. Employers will rely on engineers to increase productivity and expand output of goods and services.
