Applied Science

The Department of Applied Science comprises the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The Department is responsible for the delivery of Mathematics and Physics tuition throughout the Institute and has consulted widely with the industrial sector together with the public and private sectors in developing its courses on offer.

Involving the industrial sector in the initial development of our courses has meant that the courses are very career focused and tailored to the need of industry in the modern technological environment. Over the past few years most of our students who have successfully completed our courses have been readily employed. Others who have not taken up this option have been able to progress further in their academic studies. The Department offers a total of 7 undergraduate courses in the fields of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science.

In addition, the Department of Science recognises and understands that moving from the learning environment of Secondary School to that of a Third Level institution may be stressful for many students. In particular the nature of the lecturer/student interaction is different to those experienced at Secondary Level. The Department has established small group tutorials for all first year students in the subjects of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. These sessions help to ease the potentially stressful transfer into Third Level.
