The Department of Mechanical are interested in collaborating with established industry in running student projects for our 3rd and 4th year students. Our projects begin in September of each year and are completed by April. Each student is assigned an internal supervisor (member of the lecturing staff) who will meet the student on a regular basis to provide technical and project management assistance to the student. We welcome the contribution of industry professionals to aid the student progress their project and meet their learning outcomes. The Level 7 B.Eng projects tend to focus on solving engineering problems and developing a hardware solution while the Level 8 B.Eng (Hons) students will concentrate on developing a solution to an engineering problem while focusing more on data analysis.

The Department has an integrated set of software and hardware which supports student’s projects. These range from CAD/CAM, FEA, CFD, Matlab, Labview and statistics software to manufacturing workshop, materials, metrology, automation, fluids and thermodynamics equipment.

The student typically is expected to dedicate six hours every week to their project and will complete a final report, project poster and presentation. There are also interim outputs required. Industry projects which can be completed with a student contribution of 6hrs/week x 26 weeks are suitable and welcome.

Programme:  Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Marketing Communications
Duration:      Industry Project:  Students devise an Out-of-Home (OOH) campaign (creative and media plan) for an external company/organisation. This does not require a work placement.
The Industry Project is undertaken by students in semester 6.  Students are divided into teams of 4 and are given a brief by the OOH agency, Kinetic WW, and one of their clients (last year the client was the Brand Manager for Nature Valley). They are required to create an OOH campaign (creative and media plan), and then they pitch it back to Kinetic, the client and Kinetic’s media partner, MEC. The learning curve is very steep and gives the students a real taste of the real world. The module descriptor for the Industry Project module is available in the programme information for the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Advertising and Marketing Communications, semester 6.

In semester 6, Event Management is an elective against Industry Project. Those students taking Event Management are allocated to a team, and each team is given a brief to plan and implement an event. They are responsible for all aspects of the event from budget to promotion to operations, and they gain a lot of experience dealing with third parties. In previous years, students organised charity events for Mental Health Ireland, as well as conferences with speakers from companies such as Irish International and AIB . Students engage with a client to plan and manage an event. This does not require a work placement.
