Project title: Graphite rod immunoassay – Troponin T and G –actin determination

Postgraduate researcher: Dhanraj Rathod


Objective: Exploitation of carbon transducers such as pencil leads and carbon cloth/mesh materials as immunomodified surfaces for cardiac marker binding (labelled and label free approaches). Lateral flow immunoassay format with printed electrodes enabled troponin T determination in a simple and convenient assay format.

Project title: Instrument free diagnostics for rural Africa –Phone Operated Paper TB Sensor (i-POPS)

Postgraduate researcher: Brian Murphy


Objective: A key aim of this proposal is to address the reliability and ease of use of human TB testing contributing to cheaper, accessible diagnostics for rural clinics in countries such as South Africa. A successful outcome to this project will be establishment of low cost paper based electronic lateral flow immunodiagnostic strips which facilitate rapid and quantitative TB detection. Signaling and data acquisition will be achieved via novel use of audio/microphone Android phone connections, enabling communication to and from the sensor strip together with a domain specific application which collects changes in resistance in response to the presence of a glycolipid (LAM) - indicating the presence of the TB organism in the sample.

Project title: Sensors for Neurochemical Analysis


Researchers: Susan Warren, Rodica Doaga


Objective: The electro-oxidation of β-methylumbelliferone (βmU) at a graphite rod electrode produces a porous insulating ‘layer’, the pore size of which is dependent on the concentration of deposition solution and the number of deposition cycles applied. The films were characterised using a combination of electrochemistry and electron microscopy, in an attempt to visualise and quantify the resulting “active sites” / “pores” that these layers form under specific conditions (see images below). Some of the applications include the use of the βmU layer as a size-selective film for the selective electrochemical determination of dopamine in the presence of other catecholamines, catechols and monoamines in addition to the use of the these layers as a template for the formation of nanoelectrodes for use in biosensor design and heavy metal analysis.

Project title: BIO-SCAN – Bulk Tank Milk Quality Screening


Researchers: Simon Egan and Carmen Negredo

Objective: The core objective of BIO-SCAN is the development of innovative, bulk-tank milk screening technology for identification of heat-resistant - thermoduric - bacteria. This will realise a flexible platform for on-farm milk quality monitoring (antibiotics, biocides, somatic cell count and nutritional factors) at bulk tank level. Data is disseminated wirelessly to the dairy company, ultimately influencing decisions surrounding milk value and product usage (see http://www.micra.ie for further information).
