Standard Applicants

Where a CAO applicant needs to complete Part A of the CAO application only, they are defined as a ‘Standard Applicant’.

An example of a standard applicant would be a school leaver who has successfully completed the Leaving Certificate examinations in Ireland and wishes to apply for admission to a first year programme in higher education via the CAO using the Leaving Certificate points awarded.

Higher Certificate (Level 6) and Bachelor Degree (Level 7) Programmes

The Minimum Entry Requirements for the Higher Certificate  and Ab-Initio Bachelor Degree programmes are:

  • You must obtain at least a Grade H7/O6 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate including English or Irish and Mathematics (Please note there are different Maths requirements for our Engineering programmes, please refer to each programme for specific Maths requirements)
  • For the purpose of meeting minimum entry requirements only, results from any number of sittings of the Irish Leaving Certificate may be combined.
  • Results from comparable examinations in other EU Countries are also accepted. Instruction is through English and applicants who do not have Leaving Certificate English will have to provide evidence of equivalent competence. Read more about our Access English test by clicking here.
 

Honours Degree Programmes – Level 8

The Minimum Entry Requirements for the Honours Bachelor Degree Programme are:

  • You must obtain a Grade H5 in two higher Level subjects in the Leaving Certificate and at least a Grade O6 in four other subjects including english or Irish and Maths. (Please note there are different Maths requirements for our engineering programmes, please refer to each engineeting programme for specific Maths requirements.)

Bonus Points for Mathematics awarded

A bonus of 25 points will be allocated to students who achieve a grade H6 or above in Higher Level Mathematics. This means that the maximum cumulative Leaving Certificate points total will increase from 600 to 625 (existing maximum points plus bonus points).

Foundation Level Mathematics

  • A pass in Foundation Level Mathematics at F2 level or higher will be considered as meeting the minimum entry requirements for courses which currently require a minimum entry level H7/O6 in Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics.
  • Students with Foundation Level Mathematics at F2 level or higher must have passed four other subjects with a minimum grade of H7/O6 for the Higher Certificate (Level 6) and Bachelor Degree (Level 7) Programmes.
  • Students with Foundation Level Mathematics at F2 level or higher must have passed five other subjects with a minimum grade of H7/O6 for the Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8) Programmes. 
  • Foundation Level Mathematics may be used for the purpose of determining Leaving Certificate points and where it is so used the following scale will apply:

    F1      F2         
    20      12          

Foundation Level Irish

 A grade F3 in Foundation Level Irish is acceptable for meeting the minimum entrance requirements for all Higher Certificate Programmes. Students with a F3 in Foundation Level Irish must have passed five other subjects with a minimum grade of O6 including Maths.
