How to apply

All applications by mature students to our Full-Time Undergraduate Courses should be made through the Central Applications Office (CAO). More information can be found on www.cao.ie  Applications for Full-Time Undergraduate Courses starting in September 2017 open in early November 2016 and close 1st February 2017. The late closing date is 1st May 2017, but places for mature students are usually filled from applicants to the 1st February 2017.

For further information on how to apply as a mature student through the CAO, please refer to the video below

Entry Requirements
Mature applicants are not required to satisfy the Minimum Entry Requirements that apply to applicants under 23 years of age. Mature applicants are considered on various criteria: your life and work experience, knowledge and skills, and any special interests will be taken into account. Always read the CAO Handbook before making a mature application, as there are specific rules and guidelines for mature applicants.

Some mature applicants may have the Minimum Entry Requirements (Leaving Cert. / relevant FETAC cert. / equivalent overseas qualification), and these may be sufficient to be offered a place. However all mature applicants are considered under the Mature Selection process, so applicants with the minimum entry requirements will be in two selection processes.

Selection of Mature Applicants
Up to 20% of places on each course are reserved for Mature applicants. Selection is based on your CAO application and an interview in May (applicants may be shortlisted for interview).
We focus on the following when assessing applicants:

  • Evidence that the applicant has researched the courses applied for
  • Preparation for higher education (recent courses/study)
  • Any relevant experience or training
  • Awareness of the demands of full-time higher education (workload; finances; impact on personal and social circumstances etc.)
  • Career goals

Advanced Entry If you have relevant prior learning and/or educational attainment you may be eligible for entry to the 2nd or even the 3rd year of a course. Applications are made directly to the Institute. See the Advanced Entry/Transfer section of our website for more information.
