Today, at the opening of Amazon Web Services new Shannon building, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar praised the joint Data Center Technician Programme jointly developed by IT Tallaght and Amazon AWS.  In an exciting development, Mike Beary, AWS Ireland country manager, announced a further development of 1000 jobs with AWS adding to the 2500 AWS employees already in Ireland.

Institute of Technology Tallaght President, Thomas Stone, took part in an illuminating panel discussion on skills requirements for the Irish jobs market, mentioning the desire for further industry integration with third level education, underlining the opportunities for graduates in cloud computing and emphasising the need for investment in higher education facilities to keep Irish HEIs modern and relevant to industry.

The Data Center technician programme is being supported by 20 bursaries for students and opportunities for paid placement in an AWS Data Center.

Over the past two years IT Tallaght has developed many additional programmes with the support of AWS. In 2016 IT Tallaght became the first AWS Academy accredited in Ireland (and one of the first in Europe) to deliver the Cloud Solutions Architect Associate academy programme. This has benefitted a significant number of Computing students who have gone on to start careers with Amazon AWS and firms using the AWS ecosystem.

For one of the 2018 IT Tallaght graduates we spoke to recently, who successfully obtained his AWS certification as part of the IT Tallaght AWS Academy, it gave him pause for thought.   When asked the slightly importune question, “have they offered you a good starting salary?” he paused, thought for a second and stated ‘Well my father told me it was a greater salary than he had ever been paid during his lifetime’.  On an individual scale as well as a corporate scale the Amazon AWS motto ‘Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History’ can really ring true.

For the academic year 2018-19, IT Tallaght has the following programmes with strong AWS content funded under Springboard and open to those in employment as well as other Springboard categories:

  • B. Sc. Cloud Computing & DevOps
  • Minor Award Certificate, Cloud Solutions Architect
  • Minor Award Cloud Provisioning, Management & Security
  • B. Sc. Honours IT Management
