Bachelor of Engineering in Energy and Environmental at IT TallaghtB.Eng in Energy & Environmental Engineering is an innovative new programme, which ran for the first time in September 2009. It is delivered as a joint programme across the School of Engineering. The area of energy and environmental engineering is currently high on the agenda of many individuals, companies and governments as we become increasingly aware of the importance of sustaining energy cost effectively and reducing environmental damage. We have collaborated with academic colleagues in France and Austria to design the programme with a European context given the global interest in energy and environmental activity. It is envisaged that the Masters programme will be available for the first graduates of this proposed programme in 2012.

We have drawn on the expertise of academics and technical staff from the Departments of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering for the delivery of this programme.

Programme Aims:
The aims of this programme are to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to promote energy efficiency and environmental awareness in industry. Graduates will be able to work effectively in the domestic and international energy industries having gained a broad technical knowledge with particular focus on energy technologies.

The key focus of the programme is to provide graduates with the following:

  • An understanding of the operating principles of a wide range of energy and environmental systems
  • An ability to identify and solve problems in the specialised area of energy and the environment as well as carrying out system performance measurements.
  • A good working knowledge of software and hardware systems relevant to analysis, modelling, design and control of energy and environmental systems.
  • Technical and financial analysis capabilities relevant to the energy industry including the optimisation of energy system performance.
  • Valuable interpersonal and written communication skills to permit effective communications and debating with the engineering community, interdisciplinary groups and with society at large.

Entry Level

If under 23 years, applicants must have a grade D3 (ordinary level) in a minimum of five subjects in the Leaving Certificate. Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempted from this requirement and are eligible to apply. All applicants must have competence in spoken and written English. Eligible candidates may be interviewed.

Career Opportunities

Bachelor of Engineering in Energy and Environmental As indicated in the EU and Irish Government White papers on Energy, it is anticipated that there will significant growth in employment opportunities in the conventional and renewable energy sectors as energy efficiency assumes a greater importance. This also signals and increase in opportunities for careers in the Energy and Environmental areas globally.

The main roles for graduates of this programme are to:

  • Implement energy demand side management for industrial and commercial facilities, including conducting energy audits, the establishment and operation of energy management systems, the identification and development of energy reduction opportunities.
  • Install, operate, maintain and optimise the performance of conventional and renewable energy technologies.
  • Assist with the design and development of energy systems and elements of these systems as part of a design team.
  • Install, operate, maintain and optimize the performance of waste handling systems.
  • Assist with the design and development of waste handling systems and elements of these systems as part of a design team.
  • Manage and engage in projects in the installation of conventional and renewable energy systems.
  • Fulfil a technical sales support role advising clients and fellow members of a sales team on technical aspects of proposed energy and waste handling projects.
