Biomedical Design at IT Tallaght

The Biomedical Design degree in IT Tallaght is an exciting new programme developed to address the needs of the emergent medical technology industry.  Built upon an interdisciplinary approach across engineering and science the programme will equip graduates for diverse career paths working as part of a design team with medical professionals, in hospitals, in research centres or in the manufacture of exciting new medical devices in Ireland and internationally.

 

Students at IT Tallaght School of Engineering apply the design and problem solving skills studied as part of their Biomedical Design course to healthcare problems with the aim of improving the type of devices used in healthcare and also the treatments offered to patients.

 

 

TA218 Level 7
B.Eng in Biomedical Design

(3-Years full-time with option of 1-year add on to Level 8 B.Eng (Hons) in Biomedical Design**)
This course explores the application of engineering principles to solve the considerable challenges faced by clinicians trying to improve patient quality of life. The course begins by providing the student with a strong foundation in core biomedical topics such as human anatomy, biomechanics and materials. This core knowledge is further developed as the course progresses onto topics such as Medical Imaging & Graphics and Medical Device Design. Students will also gain an insight into the medical device industry during modules on Regulatory Affairs and Management & Professional Development. Graduates of this course are well equipped to enter a wide variety of roles in the Biomedical sector such as Product and Process design, Manufacturing, Production and Automation.     

TA224 Level 8
B.Eng (Hons) in Biomedical Design

(4-Years full-time, Year 1-3 common with Level 7 B.Eng in Biomedical Design)
This course builds on the knowledge developed during the Level 7 programme and advances onto more specialised skills such as analytical design methods using model based simulations of medical devices. These advanced simulation skills are becoming increasingly important in the biomedical device sector as companies and regulators recognise the value of simulation models in the biomedical design process. The course culminates in a final year project that is carried out in conjunction with industry and surgeons from Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin, Tallaght Hospital, The Mater Hospital and Santry Sports Clinic. 

Graduates of this course have an exciting range of options open to them in the Biomedical industry or may choose to continue their studies to Master’s/PhD level by research at the Bioengineering Technology Centre (BTC) in the Institute. Recent projects studied by the BTC group include diverse biomedical topics such as treatments of spinal fractures and flow modelling in the Oesophagogastric Junction. The analytical skills developed by graduates during the Level 8 course in Biomedical Design provides a strong foundation for building a successful career in research.

What do I Need?

TA218 Level 7 B.Eng in Biomedical Design - 1st Year Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate Examination with:
  • Minimum of Grade O4/H7 in Mathematics,
  • Minimum of four other subjects at Grade O6/H7
  • One of the above subjects must be English.

Requirements for continuation to Level 8
**Progression onto the Level 8 programme requires a GPA of 2.5 and a B average in Maths from year 3 of the Level 7 degree.


TA224 Level 8 B.Eng (Hons) in Biomedical Design - 1st Year Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate Examination with:
  • Minimum of two subjects at Higher Level Grade H5,
  • Minimum of Grade O4/H7 in Mathematics,
  • Minimum of three other subjects at Grade O6/H7
  • One of the above subjects must be English.
