"Students can choose either TA216: Bachelor of Engineering in Engineering Software or TA216: Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering

TA216 allows for students to choose a discipline focused on either Electronic Engineering or Software Engineering. Both areas allow students to develop a deeper understanding of Engineering principles and acquire the ability to quickly grasp Engineering issues across a range of different fields.  The graduate Engineer will be able to offer solutions to problems that are driven by well-developed analytical and practical skills whether through pure Electronics or Software driven problems."

The BEng Degree in Electronic Engineering is a strong technically focused programme which is completed in three years. The BEng is targeted at building a technical foundation to deepen the knowledge base of the student and allow development of firm technical skills. The objective is to produce Technician Engineers with a broad knowledge base possessing the required skills for employment in areas such as design, maintenance,technical sales and consultancy 

Technology is improving all the time and computers continue to become faster. In every area of living and leisure electronic engineers are packing more power into the microchip. Electronic systems are major elements in today’s global economy. People communicate all the time using telecommunications systems and typical products include mobile and landline phones, aircraft communication systems, video and sound streaming, broadband internet systems and satellite communications.

The Technician Engineer takes a more analytical approach to engineering problems, and shows keen problem solving skills across a wide range of engineering areas. This programme will also equip students with a practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of software engineering so they can play an important role in electronic, software and telecommunication companies. Graduates will also be in a position to fill roles in areas such as software support and maintenance with many different types of companies.

In the third year of the programme students are provided with a major hardware or software project which constitutes an important element of the programme and is designed to develop project management and communications skills in addition to the technical requirements.

A student may exit to take employment in industry upon completion of the BEng programme or stay on to take the BEng Honours programme.  The opportunities are plentiful.

Electronic Engineering at IT TallaghtICT industries are likely to form the main source of employment.  Most companies involved in the high technology sector rely on people with engineering skills to function as a creative and innovative element of the workforce and in addition a range of service industries, including mobile phones, rail transport and aviation, also rely heavily on electronic engineers.

There is clear evidence that there are shortages of engineering personnel right across the board.  As industry recovers in the coming years due to a recovery in performance of the pharmaceutical, medical devices, semiconductor and IT sectors the demands for technologists will be strong with employers experiencing difficulties in sourcing engineers able to work with advanced technology systems.
