Completing Application

Careful attention needs to be given to the completion of the form entitled:
Institute of Technology Tallaght Dublin Application to HETAC for Registration of a Research Degree Programme

  • Evidence of the candidate’s experience;
  • A detailed research proposal, indicating objectives, tasks and schedule;
  • The CVs of the supervisors – focus on research experience;
  • Listing of structured elements of the research programme – induction training, other generic training, specialist training, seminars, conferences etc.
  • If there are external links then evidence of this needed – is their access to their resources etc.;
  • Listing of relevant specialist facilities where required;
  • Funding details where required.
  • Please ensure that all appropriate sections have been completed.

 

The following are some guidelines that may be of use in completing the application form. The guidelines are given below by section heading as they appear on the form.

Candidate’s Details
Please ensure the permanent address is the one at which the applicant is certain to receive any communication sent to them by the Institute.

Where the applicant does not yet have a PPS (or PPSN) no. please refer them to the Development and External Services Office for the procedure on securing one.

How To Get A PPS No.

Only your local Social Welfare Office can issue you with a PPS No. In order to get a number you will need to fill out an application form and provide proof of your identity. This is to ensure a person receives one and only one PPS No.

If the candidate is Irish they will need to bring the following to their local Social Welfare Office:

Your Birth Certificate and Photographic ID such as your Driving Licence or Passport and  Evidence of address such as a Household Bill in your name.  If the candidate is not Irish you will need to bring the following to their local Social Welfare Office:

Your Passport or National Identity Card or
Your Immigration Card and
Evidence of address such as a Household Bill in your name.

Place an X in the “Approved” box for those submitting an application to the following registers:

Master of Arts
Master of Business
Doctor of Philosophy (all disciplines other than BIOLOGY or CHEMISTRY)
Place an X in the “Accredited” box for those submitting an application to the following registers:

Master of Engineering
Master of Science
Doctor of Philosophy BIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY disciplines only
 

Title of Proposed Research Degree Programme
Enter the proposed thesis title in its entirety.

Fields of Education Classification for the award being sought (CSO)
These are for use by the Central Statistics Office in future surveys.This classification was derived from a joint project with Eurostat and UNESCO. It is based on the International Standard Classification of Education - ISCED 1997 (Fields of Education). Further information on this classification may be obtained from: http://www.cso.ie/surveysandmethodologies/classifications_fields_Ed.htm

Under LEVEL 1 enter – 4 (indicates that it is third level)
Under LEVEL 2 enter – 42 (indicates that is a Degree or Higher)
Under LEVEL 3 enter – 423 for all Masters Applicantsor 424 for PhD Applicants (indicates the level of the specific research programme)

Proposed Programme of Research
Each application for registration must include a detailed research proposal which must have been independently evaluated by one of the following mechanisms.

Funded projects which were evaluated as part of approval for funding secured need only indicate that assessment has already been conducted. Provide the name the funding agency, funding amount secured for project and duration of funding;
non-funded projects must be evaluated by internal or external experts in the proposed field of study and a report from the expert attached to the application;
industrial sponsored projects must be evaluated by internal or external experts in the proposed field of study and a report from the expert attached to the application.
The research proposal should include the following:

The overall objectives of the project;
Evidence of Supervisors expertise in the project area – previous work done, relevant results from previous projects etc.;
Short introduction with reference to relevant literature included – to show that a literature survey has been conducted and that the Supervisor is familiar with the relevant literature/patents in the area;
Indicate how the research will be conducted and make reference to methodologies that will be used – include project tasks and a summary of what is involved in each and proposed timeframes for each task, including thesis preparation –include a schedule of work for the project either as part of the summary of each task or in a Gantt chart to include milestones that need to be assessed along the way;

Include a plan of work to show how you will get the student started on the project if not included above;
Summary of the report from the Institute Research Ethics Board where required;
Provide information on external links, whether work is to be conducted off campus with collaborators, if there are any specialised facilities to be used, project deliverables etc.;
For funded projects provide details of funding as mentioned previously.

Generic training and specialist courses provided
It is important to make clear what general training the proposed student will undertake during the project – include the Induction Programme and any list any other project specific or multidisciplinary training to be provided.

Supervisory Arrangements
Where there is a single supervisor is proposed for a project then only complete the “Principal Supervisor”box. A single supervisor who has not supervised to the level of the research degree programme proposed needs a mentoring supervisor. Hence, the appropriate box must also be completed.
 

Where there is more than one supervisor proposed, then one must be the Principal Supervisor and complete a separate box for each Co-Supervisor. Note: a Co-Supervisor can also be a Mentoring Supervisor, but only enter their details once.
Attach summary CVs for all Supervisors involved to the end of the form giving details on research experience in particular or anything else of relevance to the proposed programme of research.
