| On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to | - Understand the nature of representation, ideology and signifying practices
- Evaluate the factors which have contributed to representations of Ireland and the Irish in various media
- Discuss the shifts and changes occurring in cultural representations of Ireland both in the historical and contemporary global contexts
- Assess the extent to which novelistic representations are capable of supplying valuable insights into the evolution of 20th-century Irish society.

Cultural Representation Issues of representation and ideology; Cultural representation and ‘the imagined community’; Cultural representation and our relationship with the past; issues of politics, conflict, history, globalisation, gender and sexuality; contemporary modes of representation, technological constraints, structure, form and cultural context;
Popular images of Ireland and the Irish in 20th century film, literature, photography and mass media; recurring themes and motifs and the role of genre; current preoccupations and representations of political economic and cultural concerns. Tourism and Heritage Representing the past: museums, theme/folk parks, tourist images. Reflections on the ‘authentic’, the ‘real’ and the ‘hyperreal’; critical evaluation of tourist images and centres.

| Continuous Assessment | Students are required to complete an essay of approximately 2000 words. The purpose of the essay should be to allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the various theories, texts and ideas discussed and apply these in in the context of their own research.
