Description:To enable the student to appreciate the concepts of a healthy lifestyle, safe practices in the home and workplace and various aspects of health promotion.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to
  1. Describe the structure and functions of a healthy body and the malfunctions which lead to ill health.
  2. Explain the importance of diet in the production and maintenance of good health.
  3. List with the principles of health promotion.
 

Module Content & Assessment

Content
  • Biomedical Science
    Cell biology and cell development. The structure and functions of body systems e.g. circulatory, respiratory, urinary etc. The common problems and prevention of malfunctions of the above systems, infectious diseases, their transmission and prevention. Inherited disorders - Basic principles of inheritance. Dominant, recessive and sex- linked conditions. Genetic testing and screening. Genetic counselling. Complementary medicine – an overview. Exercise and Health.
  • Nutrition
    Introduction to the digestion, absorption and metabolism of food. Food constituents, the nutritional value of food and food additives. The balanced diet. Dietary requirements of different groups in the community. Special dietary needs. Food allergies. Food and disease - food hygiene.
  • Health Promotion
    Examining the concept of health. Models and approaches to health promotion. Government policy in health promotion. Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 1985 and its implications for the employer and employee. Public Health Programmes - Immunisation, developmental clinics, screening.
