Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Add-on to Cert)
About the Course
This is an add-on programme designed for those that have completed a Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, Level 6. Mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering disciplines. It is central to industries as varied as designing, manufacturing, power generation and transport.
As a mechanical engineering graduate, you will be involved in designing, building and managing all sorts of things, from small products to the factories that make them. The fundamental aim of the programme is to give students the ability to apply analytical skills to solve complex engineering problems.
Apart from maths, engineering science and mechanics, the programme will look at:
- how metals and plastics behave, and how you can make things out of them
- how fluids, electricity and heat energy behave
- how to use and program computers
- how to read and create engineering drawings and design parts
- how to write reports and use different management tools
- how to automate and control production machines, and ensure good quality

Career Opportunities
A Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering is a passport to an almost limitless range of industries and, since it is accredited by Engineers Ireland, the qualification will be recognised around the world. Whether a company is making computers or combine harvesters, pills or pizzas – it will still need mechanical engineers. We’ve gone out to these industries and asked them what skills they are looking for, and built that in to all our courses.
You might end up
- Designing products or parts of a machine
- Working in the quality department of a factory
- Managing a production area
- Trying to improve or fix a machine
- Dealing with customers or suppliers
- Or selling engineering products or services
